maylands - the reserve
south of kirkham field, along the swan river, is a stretch of nature reserve with a long flowing creek and a forest of pepper trees. further west is a long footpath to bardon park where you can see a variety of reeds, and amazingly, cats tail plants (known here as cumbungis). big thief wrote a song about the humble cumbungi.

cumbungi's look less like cats tails and more like pluto pups:

one time at the royal show peter dutton bought a pluto pup but it was actually just a cumbungi dipped in sauce and it exploded in his mouth and a bunch of the spores got caught in his windpipe and he almost choked to death, he had to go to hospital, it was really serious.

thats it for the nature at the maylands reserve. now i will tell you about the grass swing incident.

one time tim made a really thick rope out of grass and threw it over an overhanging tree and created a george-of-the-jungle style crossing to get across the creek.
you can see the rope in action in our flopfest film The Marathon. it starts about 8:55 minutes in:
in 2020 the cowards at the maylands shire decided that our rope swing was dangerous as it could lead to a Bridge to Terabithia style scenario, so they called a council meeting and took a unanimous vote to remove it from the tree and then contracted some dickhead on a cherry picker to cut it down with bolt cutters, tim's rope was that strong, and then the dipshit council spent another 10 grand installing a little metal bridge to go across the creek so that no one would ever need to make a rope swing again.
