maylands - brickworks
between 1927and 1983, a good portion of the maylands peninsula was reserved for mining and making bricks. you can still see the big red-brick kiln today:

i love looking at it. sometimes explorers have cut the lock to the gates and you can go inside.

where the boring man-made lakes are now was the pits where they dug out the clay. they even had tiny trains going from the mines to the factory to the town centre:
